Pack 95 Pack 95 is a part of the Bayshore District in the Sam Houston Area Council (SHAC). Pack 95 is over 55 years old. Seabrook United Methodist Church is Pack 95’s chartering organization.
Tigers A Tiger Cub is a boy who is in first grade (or is 7 years old) and registered, with his adult partner, as a member of a Tiger Cub Den. Tiger Cubs, BSA, stresses fun, activities, and building the relationship between he boy and the adult, as well as among the Tiger Cub den members.
Bobcat Bobcat is the entrance requirement for Cub Scouting regardless of age. To earn the Bobcat, the Scout must learn the Cub Scout Promise, Law of the Pack, what WEBELOS means, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute. Each Scout MUST complete the Bobcat requirements BEFORE starting on the Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos badges.
Wolves A Wolf Cub is a boy who is in second grade.
Bears A Bear Cub is a boy who is in third grade.
Webelos Webelos is for fourth and fifth grade boys.
Parents Pack 95 encourages and prefers ACTIVE involvement by at least one parent with each Scout. While this is a requirement for Tiger Cubs, continued parental involvement demonstrates your support of your son and will help the program be more effective.
Advancement Advancement is one of the methods used to achieve Scouting’s aims of character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Everything a Cub Scout does to advance is designed to achieve these aims and aid in personal growth. Advancement is a process by which a boy progresses from badge to badge, learning new skills as he goes. Badges are simply a means to an end, not an end in themselves.
Den Flag Each den should create a flag according to the Pack 95 specifications. The flag is displayed at pack meetings and will be used through 5th grade.
Committee Meetings Committee meetings are a monthly meeting of all committee members to plan Pack events and review the Pack status. The committee meetings are open to all parents.
Den Meetings Dens typically meet once a week. Most meetings are ~1 hour long and are held at the location/time most convenient for the den leader(s)/Scouts (e.g., home, church, community center).
Pack Meetings Pack meetings are a monthly meeting of all dens and families for games, skits, presentation of advancements, and other recognitions. Pack 95 meetings are typically the last Monday of the month (September through February/March). Dens rotate in performing the flag ceremony, a skit and song.
Tiger Den Meetings Tiger Cubs and their parents typically meet 2-3 times a month. Most meetings are 1 to 1.5 hours long and are held at the location/time most convenient for the den leader(s)/Scouts (e.g., home, church, community center). The Tiger Cub year is a time to focus on the family, learn about the community, and prepare the boys to enter Cub Scouts. Tiger Cub meetings should begin with the flag ceremony and Cub Scout promise, and then focus on fun successful oriented activities (e.g., art, crafts, skits, songs, games), or field trips (a.k.a., “Go and See It”). Idea books are available from Pack 95 and the Scout Shop.

Using only two rubber bands that are wound 100 turns, the space derbies will race down the track .
Scout Day / Fishing Tournament The Bayshore District will have a Scout Day filled with various activities (in the past, this has (September 27) included archery, obstacle course, sling shots, and pushmobile) with a fishing tournament. Note that the Pack will NOT pay the registration fee for this event. Fall Fundraiser – Pack 95 will offer two products during the fall fundraiser - Christmas wreaths and popcorn. All Christmas Wreaths and Popcorn orders and money are due at the October Pack meeting. These differing items offer a broader (September / October) price range than just selling the wreaths. Each Scout will receive a patch if he sells at least 3 wreaths. The wreaths are delivered the last week of November. At the same time, Pack 95 participates in the Sam Houston Area Council fundraiser, which is to sell popcorn. Each Scout can choose prizes based on the amount of popcorn sold and will receive a patch if the designated minimum is sold. Fall Pack Camp-out The Pack is reviewing the calendar and is expected to schedule a Pack camp-out in October or November.
Raingutter Regatta The Raingutter Regatta is the sailing event of the year. Although the seas are only ~10-foot PVC(tentatively – Nov. 15) piping filled with water and the ships are a mere 6 inches long, the race is an exciting event. Each (District Derby - 2/28/2009) Scout will be provided a boat kit AFTER paying the Pack registration fee and completing the medical form and discipline policy. The Scout should assemble the boat with supervision and help from a family member. He also provides the wind for the sail with his own lung power. Rules are provided by the pack. The Bayshore District Derby Day includes a Raingutter Regatta. A Scout does not have to place in the pack to participate in the district event.
Pushmobile The pushmobile is a thrilling pack activity that is fun for the entire family. Each den builds a push- (October 24 & 25) mobile according to district specifications. The district pushmobile is held at San Jacinto College. Pack 95 has a practice session scheduled before the district race to teach the rules and racing strategies. Note that the Pack will NOT pay the registration fee for this event.
Webelos Woods Webelos Woods (4th & 5th graders) is held at a local park. The Webelos set up camp (November 21 - 23) Friday night. On Saturday morning, the Webelos patrols spend the morning rotating though skills training (e.g., building fires, tying knots, readyman, games) with local Boy Scout troops. During the afternoon, the patrols participate in various competitions. The day ends with a huge bonfire and a closing ceremony.
Lexington Trip Drive down to Corpus Christi and join Pack 95 overnight on the USS Lexington (a retired (January 24 – 25, 2009) aircraft carrier). There will be various activities on and around the Lexington during the TENTATIVE day Saturday, with all participants sleeping on-board Saturday night. All family members may participate in this event.
Scout Sunday Scouting Sunday is held in February. The “official” Scout Sunday is the first Sunday in (February 8) February. A Scout may attend his own church service in uniform on this date and/or attend Seabrook Methodist Church and participate in the flag ceremony on the second Sunday of February.
Pinewood Derby Pinewood Derby is one of the most popular and successful special events in Cub Scouting. (February 20/21) Each Scout who has paid his registration fees and completed the medical form and (District Derby on 2/28) discipline policy will be provided an official BSA Pinewood Derby kit and a copy of the district rules at the November / December Pack meeting. The Scout should build his race car with minimal assistance from a parent. Accessories for the car (stickers, weights, graphite) are available at the Boy Scout shop and at hobby stores (e.g., Hobby Lobby). The internet is filled with web sites containing helpful hints on how to build a fast Pinewood Derby car. Pack 95 requires that you use the BSA wheels, axles, and body. Prizes are awarded for the best of show for each rank, top speed in each rank, and top speed in the pack. There is also an “open” division for parents and siblings. The Bayshore district also hosts a Derby Day, which includes a Raingutter Regatta, a Pinewood Derby, and a Smash Derby. A Scout does not have to place in the pack to participate in the District event. Pinewood Derby races are also held at the Scout Fair.
Blue and Gold The Blue and Gold Banquet is a celebration of Scouting during the month of February, the (February 21) anniversary month of the Boy Scouts of America. It is also a celebration of Baden Powell’s birthday, (Lord Baden Powell was the founder of Scouting). We use this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our den leaders. Each den decorates their own table based on the theme.
Arrow of Light Ceremony The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting and may be earned by the 5th (March 14) Grade Webelos. Following a pack meeting, there is an Arrow of Light ceremony and bonfire to recognize those Scouts graduating to Boy Scouts.
Pack Camp-out at Brazos Bend Brazos Bend is a state park located southwest of Seabrook (about an hour away). The George (March 28 - 29) Observatory is located at Brazos Bend. Families are invited to camp with the pack. Note that each Scout that is camping MUST stay with his own family member.
Scout Fair The Scout Fair will be held on Saturday, April 18 at Reliant Park. The cost is one Scout (April 18) Fair ticket per family. Hundreds of packs and troops from the area set up booths. It is fun for the entire family. There is an opportunity to eat food prepared by Boy Scouts and to participate in rock climbing, art activities, crafts, science experiments, and more.
Twilight Camp Every evening for one week, Cub Scouts get to shoot BB guns, play games, make crafts, June 15 – June 19, 2009 participate in archery, work on advancements, and more.
Webelos & Cub Scout Typically run 3 days and are organized by the Sam Houston Area Council. The Scouts Resident Camps live in camp tents, eat in a camp dining hall, and participate in day and evening programs.
Pack 95 Discipline Policy
Even though there will be ample time for the boys to be boys, each Cub and parent must understand that there are limits to what will be considered acceptable behavior. At any Scout activity (den, pack, district, or council), the following Discipline Policy will be followed:
1. Remember the “Three T’s” – Don’t Tease, Touch, or Take.
2. Fighting or any other behavior that is overly disruptive or harmful to the Cub or others will not be tolerated.
3. Knives, hatchets, axes or other potentially dangerous objects are not allowed. A Cub must earn his whittling chip (as a Bear or Webelos) before carrying a pocket knife. Even then, a pocket knife should only be brought to Scout events when instructed to do so by a Leader.
4. Cubs must remain with their group at all times. The buddy system is always used during Cub Scouting activities.
5. Cubs as well as other children attending pack events are not allowed to climb on the equipment at the Ed White Youth Center. The toys and games in the Ed White Youth Center are NOT to be played with by Pack 95. The upstairs office area at the Ed White Youth Center is off limits to Pack 95.
Cub Scouting is a joint effort between a boy, his parent or guardian and pack leadership. Pack leaders will provide the organizational setup, guidance and information. However, parents or guardians must assume ultimate responsibility for their son’s advancement. Consequently, parents or guardians are asked to agree to the following Parents Code:
1. I will volunteer to assist with at least one pack function each year.
2. I will assist my son’s Den Leader with den projects and activities when called upon, volunteer to help the Den Leader with achievements that I have expertise in, encourage and support my leader, and help my leader with den meetings as much as possible (e.g., keeping the boys focused on activities, leading meetings as requested by the den leader).
3. I will attend den and pack meetings with my son. Parental supervision is required at all Scout events (den, pack, district, council). A Scout may participate in Cub Scouting activities only when supervised by his parent(s) or guardian. If, in an emergency, a parent cannot attend, arrangements must be made by the boy’s family for another youth’s parent (but not the den leader) or another adult relative or friend to be a substitute. No parent is allowed to be responsible for more than one boy other than his or her own.
4. I will set an example during pack and den meetings by not talking when the “sign is up.”
5. I will make every effort to have my son in uniform (shirt, neckerchief, and dark shorts or pants) for Cub activities. A Cub must be in uniform to receive awards.
6. I will provide encouragement and assistance in my son’s efforts to earn achievements and electives and progress from Tiger Cub to Webelos.
7. I understand that both Pack 95 and BSA require two-deep leadership at all times. There is never to be less than 2 adults alone with a Scout at any time.
8. I understand that according to BSA policy, Tigers are required to have a 1:1 ratio of Scouts to adults at all times, no exceptions.
Each Cub should sign below indicating that he has either been informed of or read the Discipline Policy. Parents are also asked to sign indicating their understanding of the Discipline Policy and their responsibilities in supporting the Pack.
